Friday, October 4, 2013

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe held on 24 January a debate on the report prepared by Assembly Member Tineke Stirk (Netherlands, SOC) entitled "Mounting tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean". The report deals with the situation of migrants and refugees in Greece and at its border with Turkey, with an emphasis on Greece's border management and on tensions within the Greek society. Special attention is paid to the situation of Syrian refugees. The report calls for stronger responsibility sharing among Member States of the European Union and of the Council of Europe, and explores possible courses of action that the latter could take.
