EASO: Annual Report on the Situation of Asylum in the European Union 2012

EASO has released its second Annual Report on the Situation of Asylum in the EU in 2012. The report includes an overview of the number of applicants for international protection in the EU, as well as recognition rates and major developments at both the national and EU level. A total of 335,365 asylum applications were filed in the EU, and the overall EU protection rate was 28%. Nationals from Afghanistan were the most numerous applicants in the EU, at 28,005, and the highest recognition rates were noted for citizens of Syria, Eritrea, Mali and Somalia.  The Syrian caseload in 2012 increased by 206 % and the most important destination countries were Germany and Sweden.
