EN - Commissioner for Human Rights 1st Quarterly Activity Report 2015

Nils Muižnieks has presented his 1st quarterly activity report of 2015 to the Council of Europe, in which he notes that the most frequent human rights shortcomings he encounters in EU countries relate to migration and asylum policies. Examples include reports of pushbacks of irregular migrants at the external borders of the EU, ill-treatment of new arrivals, poor reception conditions and inadequate integration support.

He has been active in this field, visiting Spain to discuss the treatment of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Ceuta and Melilla; urging the Bulgarian government to take additional steps to improve reception conditions and prevent pushbacks; publishing a report condemning the inadequacies in France’s reception capacity; and calling on European states to be more generous in providing protection for Syrian refugees.
